First encountering stunningly textured wall remnants in Istanbul in 2022, I began not only to document them, but also to ponder their multiple, both overt and overlooked, meanings. While walking in New York City, I noticed a quieter series of forms and open conditions confronting the street.
An obsession with forms and open conditions has led me to photograph, research, represent, and write about dozens of such walls in New York City and Istanbul—questioning their possible poetics, life stories, revealed privacy, aesthetics, histories of habitation, and signs of urban degradation.
