Recipe in Exile tackles a very personal yet universal story about tradition, family heritage and adaptability in
the face of conflict and immigration. Due to my personal attachment to the topic, I have chosen to focus on
Syrian-Armenians, whose current plight bears some semblance to the struggles of their Ottoman-Armenian
predecessors. My story spans a hundred years, juxtaposing the lives of two immigrant women from the same
family and linking them through the thread of culinary tradition. Given my fondness for draftsmanship, I took
advantage of the morphing and transitional quality of 2D frame by frame animation especially in regards to
conveying the passage of time. And though rendered digitally, I was inspired by the textures and gradients
found in analog painterly mediums, which have added a certain dimension and warmth to my work, suitable to
the familial nature of my subject matter.
