Professor of Architecture at Rice University Carlos Jiménez received his B.Arch from the University of Houston. Born in Costa Rica, he has taught throughout the United States and has served on the Pritzker Prize jury. He centers his lecture on the Americas, encompassing both Latin America and North America, and describes his background and position between the two in what he calls the “hybrid condition”. Jiménez begins with the capital of Costa Rica, San José, describing its urban and natural environments as well as its cultural restraints and opportunities. Building on that, he presents a collection of his practice’s work and highlights his experiences in architectural education.
