The Image of the Control Room

Since the Second World War, images of control rooms--replete with numerous information-laden display screens--have proliferated. What do these images tell us about recent developments in interior design? Quite a lot, it can be argued. When both the space of the interior and the screens within it were simultaneously treated as venues for display, a new conceptualization of interiority emerged. This presentation will take up display as the defining raison d'etre of the discipline, relating it to the emergence of digital culture and the ubiquity of images of the control room.

Brendan D. Moran is a historian of design education, with over fifteen years of experience teaching architects and interior designers. In addition to Pratt Institute, he has taught at the University of Toronto’s Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape and Design, Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation, and the Schools of Architecture at Yale University, Syracuse University,

Rennselaer Polytechnic Institute and the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
