Conceptual Atmospheres
Frederic Levrat’s design has explored the relationship between the Virtual, Visual and Physical spaces at a multiplicity of scales. Some of the early projects were for large scales such as urban campuses, urban boulevards and tower design. More recently, Levrat has concentrated his efforts on building at a much smaller scale, operating mostly on interior renovations in New York City. The lecture will focus of several bars, restaurants, galleries and apartments.
The tension between a conceptual development for the pleasure of the mind and an atmospheric development for the pleasure of the tactile senses is at play in every one of the projects. The three restaurants – in Chelsea, the East Village and Bushwick – are composed of expressive material and sensuous atmosphere, while the Showrooms, exhibition design and office spaces are more sculptural and conceptual. The residential project tries to preserve a level of conceptual design, but the necessity of the residential function makes the design solutions more adaptable.
In the most abstract programs, the design is a product of a process, an internal language based on the variations of a transformative geometrical elements, from an exhibition device, a window element or a wall section. In the more sensuous programs, the geometry is replaced by the repetition and transformation of existing and new materials, constituting another level of internal dialogue.
Frederic Levrat is a Visiting Associate Professor in the Interior Design Department at Pratt Institute.
