In the first half of this interactive workshop, we will discuss the culture of our classrooms in the context of cultural diversity and cultural humility. We will consider aspects of US classroom culture that often get taken for granted by faculty, but that may be very unfamiliar and potentially alienating to some students. This portion is adapted from student-facing materials developed by the Office of International Affairs. In the second half, we will invite participants to share challenges or concerns they’ve encountered when it comes to language and culture in the classroom. Together, we’ll discuss how we can design our classroom cultures in more transparent and flexible ways so as to welcome and support all students in the classroom community.
